Hi there, I’m Eric. If you’ve been following my journey at The Kilted Leatherworker for a while, you know that I have a bit of a weakness for materials that tell a story. There is something about unrolling a fresh hide of leather that just sets the tone for the day. Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time with a specific type of hide that has completely captured my imagination: full-grain buffalo.

I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on that I think perfectly captures the spirit of what I do here. It’s a piece that sits right at the intersection of my Scottish heritage and my love for rugged, functional gear. I’m talking about our new Handcrafted Full-Grain Buffalo Leather Belt Pouch. At $190, it’s an investment in a piece of gear that isn't just going to sit in a drawer: it’s designed to be on your hip, out in the world, getting better every single day.

Why Buffalo?

When people ask me why I chose buffalo hide for this specific pouch, the answer is pretty simple: it’s tough as nails. Buffalo leather is legendary for its strength and durability. Because the fibers are thicker and more widely spaced than cowhide, it has this incredible tensile strength while remaining surprisingly supple.

But beyond the technical specs, it’s the character of the grain that gets me. Buffalo leather has a distinct, pebbled texture that looks like it’s already lived a thousand lives before I even put a needle to it. For this pouch, I wanted something that felt substantial. When you hold it, you can feel the weight of it. It doesn't feel like a mass-produced accessory; it feels like a tool.

I love the way the chestnut tones of the flap contrast with the deep gold of the buffalo hide. It’s a color palette that reminds me of the highlands in autumn: earthy, warm, and timeless. I spent a long time deciding on the right closure for this piece, and I kept coming back to the brass ring and toggle. It’s simple, secure, and has a mechanical "click" in its soul that you just don't get with velcro or plastic snaps.

The Connection to the Sporran

As you might have guessed from the name of my shop, my heritage plays a huge role in everything I design. For centuries, the Scottish sporran has been the ultimate EDC (everyday carry) item. Since traditional kilts don't have pockets, the sporran was where you kept everything you needed for a day on the moors or a night in the hall.

While this buffalo pouch is designed to slide onto a standard belt, its DNA is 100% sporran. It’s that same idea of accessible, secure, hands-free carry. Whether you’re wearing a kilt or just a pair of well-worn denim, this pouch gives you that bit of extra utility without weighing down your pockets. I like to think of it as a modern tribute to a very old way of doing things.

Buffalo Pouch on Kilt

There is something deeply satisfying about seeing a piece of my work paired with a traditional tartan. It makes me feel like I’m part of a long line of makers who were focused on one thing: building gear that wouldn't fail when you needed it most. You can see more of our heritage-inspired pieces in our pouches and bags collection.

The Art of the Stitch

One thing I really pride myself on is the hand-stitching. In a world where everything is zipped through a sewing machine in seconds, I choose to do things the hard way. Every single hole is punched by hand, and every stitch is laid by hand using a traditional saddle stitch.

Why do I bother? Because a machine stitch (a lock stitch) can unravel if a single thread breaks. A hand-sewn saddle stitch, however, won't. It’s essentially two independent threads crossing through every hole. If one side wears through after a decade of hard use, the other side stays tight. It’s the difference between a product that lasts a season and one that lasts a lifetime.

When I’m sitting at my bench, working my way around the edge of a pouch, it gives me time to reflect. It’s almost a form of meditation. I’m not rushing to hit a quota; I’m ensuring that every stitch is perfect. It’s that patience that allows me to stand behind every piece I sell. I want you to know that when you buy handmade leather goods from me, you’re getting my best work, one step at a time.

Built for Daily Adventure

I’ve had a few folks ask me what exactly they should put in a leather belt pouch like this. The answer is: whatever your adventure requires. I personally use mine to clear out my pockets. My phone, a pocket knife, a lighter, and maybe a small notebook for when inspiration strikes.

If I’m headed out for a long walk in the woods, it’s the perfect spot for a compass and some fire starter. If I’m at a highland games or a craft fair, it’s where I keep my square reader and extra business cards. The point is, it adapts to you.

The more you wear it, the more it becomes yours. Full-grain leather has this wonderful habit of developing a patina. Every scratch, every scuff, and every bit of oil from your hands will darken and polish the leather over time. In five years, your pouch won't look like anyone else’s. It will be a map of your own travels.

A Lifetime of Use

I’m a big believer in the "buy once, cry once" philosophy. I’d much rather spend $190 on a piece of gear that I know will outlive me than spend $40 every year on something made of "genuine" leather (which is usually just scraps glued together) that falls apart the moment it gets wet.

This buffalo leather sporran is built to handle the elements. It doesn't mind a bit of rain or a dusty trail. In fact, it kind of likes it. Every once in a while, give it a little bit of leather conditioner to keep it hydrated, and it will keep serving you faithfully for decades.

Little did I know when I started my leatherworking journey that I’d eventually be making pieces like this for people all over the world. It’s been an incredible ride, and I’m so grateful to everyone who supports small-batch makers like me.

Final Thoughts

Taking a break from the bench to write this, I’m sipping on a cold ginger ale and looking over the latest batch of pouches. There is something about the way the light hits the buffalo hide that just makes me smile. It’s rugged, it’s traditional, and it’s ready for whatever you can throw at it.

If you’ve been looking for a way to carry your gear that has a bit more soul than a nylon backpack, I’d love for you to check out this leather belt pouch. It’s more than just a bag; it’s a piece of craft that I’m proud to put my name on.
